Not only one classic game, but two are available on one cartridge. Again, I'm not sure if its because of the hardware, but I definitely found myself turning down the volume less in this version compared to the Nes ones during dialog heavy sections. The beeping sounds used during dialog seem to be toned down here. Same issue with the Nes versions of the games here, most songs are pretty short and as a result can get annoying due to repetitiveness. Some of the sound effects were well done, but nothing out of the ordinary for a Gbc game. It may simply be my fondness for the hardware, but I did notice little parts of songs that I don't remember hearing on the Nes versions.

The songs seem to be the same in both games as their respective source material but are somehow more pleasant on the Gbc. Different areas all have their own songs. Music and sound effects are handled well enough. Enemy sprites look decent, it would have been nice if they had been more detailed, but this is due to hardware constraints. There are some battle animations, but mostly just blinking enemy sprites and an overlaid sprite showing the enemies being hit. Most likely this was to compensate for the non back-light the Gbc screen was missing but playing on an emulator, it makes the transition to battles a bit jarring, especially if playing in low light conditions. The Nes version of dragon warrior 2 had black backgrounds during battles, but the Gbc version uses a white background. Nothing mind blowing, but to me at least, better looking than the Nes version.

The overworld sprites and environments in both games have gotten a decent upgrade from the Nes versions, nice use of color, more detailed with good lines. In Dragon Warrior 1 being the last descendant of Loto the legendary hero, the main character is summoned by the king and tasked with defeating the evil DracoLord, the villain behind the theft of the Light Orb, an artifact of great power, and the kidnapping of the princess.ĭragon Warrior 2 takes place 100 years after the original and opens with the siege of the kingdom of Moonbrook and the assassination of its king.
